How Do You Juggle It All? A Sports Mom’s Guide to Surviving the Beautiful Chaos 😂⚾🥎⚽
“How do you do it all?”
This is hands down the NUMBER ONE question I get asked!
How do you juggle all the sports practices, private lessons, personal training sessions, work, homework, house chores, dinners, laundry, and somehow manage to keep your brain functioning like a normal human being?
Lord, HELP ME. Some days I wonder the same thing!
And let me tell you, the answer isn’t simple. There are days when I feel like I’m running a small transportation company, a restaurant, a laundry service, and a full-time sports management agency… all while trying to remember what day it is.
And yes, I’ve gotten the judgment, too.
Yes, I have three kids. Yes, they all play different sports. Yes, they’re all involved in travel sports and then some. And yes, our calendar sometimes looks like it needs its own assistant.
But here’s the thing: THEY LOVE IT, AND THEREFORE, I LOVE IT, TOO.
The running, the stress, the late dinners, the endless equipment, the car snacks, the practices stacked on top of practices, and the straight-up CHAOS. I wouldn’t trade these days for anything on this earth.
Are they exhausting? Absolutely.
Do I occasionally sit in the car wondering how I’m going to make it all happen? You bet.
But watching my kids chase their dreams, learn life lessons, build friendships, and do what they love makes every crazy day worth it.
So, how do I attempt to keep it all together without completely losing my mind? Here are a few of my must-dos!
1. The Old-School Paper Calendar Is STILL My Girl
You can take my paper calendar out of my cold, dead hands.
I use a color-coordinated paper calendar with erasable pens because, let’s be honest, plans change approximately 47 times a week in our house.
One kid has practice, another has a game, someone needs to be picked up, and suddenly a private lesson has moved to a completely different time.
Color-coding helps me see who’s doing what and when at a glance. It’s old school, but it works!
Sometimes you just can’t beat putting pen to paper and having everything right in front of you.
2. My Skylight Calendar Is My Modern-Day Lifesaver
While I love my paper calendar, my Skylight Calendar is the modern-day version that helps keep our whole family on track.
Ours hangs at the bottom of the stairs, which means the kids can see the schedule, too!
This is HUGE because I want them to be part of the process, not just depend on Mom to remember every single detail.
They can see what’s coming up, what practices they have, and what’s happening that day. It helps everyone know what’s going on and keeps our household moving in the same direction.
Does it prevent every scheduling disaster? No. Am I still occasionally scrambling? Of course.
But having a central place where everyone can check the schedule takes a little pressure off my brain, and I’ll take every bit of help I can get!
3. Meal Planning and Prepping Saves My Sanity
Every Monday, before I head to the grocery store, I try to sit down and plan our meals for the week.
Notice I said try.
Because sometimes Monday comes and goes, the grocery store doesn’t happen, and dinner becomes a creative exercise in figuring out what the heck is in the refrigerator. We’ve all been there!
But when I can plan ahead, it makes a WORLD of difference.
I plan out:
Dinners for the week, especially the nights when we’re running from one activity to the next.
Quick meals that can be thrown together when everyone gets home at different times.
Weekend snacks for those long tournament days.
Our grocery list so I’m not making 17 trips to the store.
You don’t have to spend an entire Sunday meal-prepping 47 containers of chicken and rice to be organized. Sometimes simply knowing what’s for dinner and having the ingredients ready is enough.
The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is fewer 5 p.m. meltdowns when everyone is hungry and nobody knows what’s for dinner. And by everyone, I might be including myself.
4. Work Smarter, Not Harder
This is one of my biggest secrets!
When I know we’re going to be sitting at practice or training for an hour or two, I bring work or items from my to-do list with me. As I sit here writing this blog, I am sitting in my car watching my oldest daughter's soccer practice and getting it done!
Emails? Check.
Planning something for the blog? Check. (As I said, doing that now at a practice!)
Knocking out a few tasks I’ve been putting off? Check!
Instead of sitting there thinking about everything I should be doing, I use that time to get a few things accomplished while still being there to watch my kids do what they love.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Sometimes I put the computer/phone down and simply watch. Those moments matter, too.
But when I can cross a few things off my list from the sidelines, it takes a little stress off the rest of my day.
It’s about finding little pockets of time and using them when you can. We’re busy enough without making things harder on ourselves!
5. The Sports Bag Is Basically My Traveling Survival Kit
If you know, you KNOW.
My sports bag is not just a bag. It’s a mini convenience store, first-aid station, snack bar, and emergency preparedness kit all rolled into one.
I’ve talked about my sports-mom must-haves in another blog, but here are a few things I NEVER want to be without:
A medication organizer: Because somebody always needs something.
Clear organizing bags: Everything has a place, and I can actually find it when I need it.
A Snackle Box: All the snacks together in one place. It’s basically a charcuterie board for the car or ball field!
Activities and crafts for siblings: Because not every child is playing every game, and keeping everyone entertained is a sport of its own.
Portable chargers: Because a dead phone during a 12-hour tournament day is a crisis I refuse to experience.
The more prepared I am before we leave the house, the fewer emergencies I have to manage on the go.
And if you haven’t read my sports-bag blog yet, add it to your list. Your future self will thank you!
6. Give Sports Equipment a Home
If I had a dollar for every time someone asked, “Mom, where are my cleats?” we’d probably be retired by now.
Every child needs an organized, designated spot for their equipment. Bats, balls, gloves, cleats, shoes, bags, uniforms, and whatever else their particular sport requires.
Everything needs a home!
I try to keep equipment in a spot where the kids can easily grab what they need and get out the door.
And here’s the important part: THE KIDS NEED TO HELP WITH THIS, TOO.
I’m happy to organize, but I cannot be the only person responsible for knowing where every piece of equipment is at all times. I’m a mom, not a walking inventory management system.
Teaching them to get their bags ready, check their equipment, and put things back where they belong helps them become more independent and takes a little off my plate.
Will everything always be perfect? Absolutely not. But at least we’re trying!
7. Find Your People and USE THE CARPOOL!
Let me say this louder for the moms in the back: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING ALONE.
Coordinate with teammates. Set up carpools. Trade pickups. Ask for help when you need it.
If one family can take the kids to practice while another handles pickup, that can make a HUGE difference in everyone’s day.
This is where having a village really matters.
I am fortunate to have the most amazing support system, and my kids honestly wouldn’t be able to do half the things they do without it.
Between family, friends, teammates, and other sports parents, we help each other make it happen.
And when someone offers to help, don’t automatically say no because you feel like you should be able to handle everything yourself.
Accept the help. Return the favor when you can. We’re all trying to make it through this crazy season of life!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my circle!!
8. Give Yourself a Little Grace
Here’s the part we don’t talk about enough.
You can have the calendars, the meal plans, the organized equipment, the perfectly packed sports bag, and the best carpool system in the world, and some days will STILL be a complete disaster.
Someone will forget something. Dinner will be late. The laundry will pile up. You’ll miss an email. The schedule will change at the last minute.
And that’s OKAY.
You are allowed to be overwhelmed sometimes. You are allowed to order pizza instead of cooking. You are allowed to leave the laundry in the basket and go to bed.
You don’t have to prove to anyone that you can do it all.
We’re all figuring it out as we go, and the goal is not to be the perfect sports mom. It’s to find ways to make this busy season manageable while still enjoying the life we’re working so hard to keep moving.
One Day, I’ll Miss All This Chaos
I know there will come a day when the house is quieter, the calendar isn’t filled with practices and games, and I’m not constantly asking someone if they’ve packed their cleats.
One day, I’ll probably be the mom wondering why nobody is home for dinner anymore.
And I know I’ll miss this.
I’ll miss the car rides, the sideline conversations, the tournament weekends, the cheering, the team friendships, and even some of the chaos that currently makes me want to pull my hair out.
These days are exhausting, but they’re also a privilege.
So, to the mama juggling three different sports schedules, working full-time, helping with homework, planning meals, washing uniforms at midnight, and wondering how she’s going to get everyone where they need to be tomorrow: I SEE YOU.
You’re doing a lot. You’re allowed to admit it’s hard. And you don’t have to do it perfectly to be doing a great job.
Find your systems. Lean on your people. Pack the snacks. Charge the phones. And remember to enjoy the moments in between all the running around.
Because someday, we’ll wish we could have just one more crazy Tuesday.
And until then? We’re going to keep showing up, cheering loudly, and doing the best we can.
Now go check your calendar, because I guarantee somebody has a practice you forgot about (LOL).
